Under the Sea
Happy 1st of July! This month, we're taking a look at the various creatures that live underwater " in the oceans, seas, lakes, and ponds of the world.Did you know that sea lions are expert divers? Some can reach depths of 900 feet and hold their breath for 20 minutes on average! They do this by SEALing their nostrils shut and using their special muscles to breathe underwater. They are also strong swimmers, going as fast as 25 miles per hour!
Sea lions are related to seals and walruses, but also dogs. They share many characteristics with our canine friends, much like the way humans are genetically similar to chimpanzees. Sea lions are affectionate, they bark and sniff, and love to play. And their babies are even called pups!Want to wade through the waves, lie on a lily pad, or paddle through a pond? Use your imagination to take you there with these water-loving animals!From fish to frogs, there are so many different creatures in our local lakes to learn about.
